A burl is a growth that forms over a long period of time, to cover an injury that has occurred to a tree. An insect boring a hole into the tree trunk usually causes the injury. Burls yield a very peculiar and highly figured wood, prized for its beauty by many; its rarity also adds to its expense. The burl timber is very hard and has a shorter wood grain pattern than the main trunk wood.
Each burl is a one off and they are in high demand by our clientele.

Blue
This piece is made from a Sydney Bluegum Burl (Eucalyptus Saligna) recovered in Northern NSW from a fallen tree that was almost 50 metres tall. It was estimated to be well over 100 year old.
The base is a South Australian Mallee root salvaged after clearing Eucalyptus for grazing. The process began during Early European Settlement and the bases are becoming rarer to obtain.
